In this article, I will be exploring my experiences with woodworking, in particular why I love woodworking. It all started several years ago, when I was looking for a way to make some money, I had all these schemes in mind, none of which were as interesting as woodworking.
The short short is that, I started making furniture and sold it through numerous furniture stores for cash. This was because, I was in college and I did not have much money – also, I absolutely loved woodworking – it was a great passed time.
I remember once that I needed bookcase plans, because I wanted to make a bookcase but did not know how to do it off the top of my head. I remember that I had to go to the library, why? because the internet was not invented yet. I remember looking through books for hours on end and I just could not find the plans that I wanted.
The bookcase was either too big or too small or the the style was just way off. After much deliberating, I found a plan that was the right one for me to make. I then went to my local hardware store that sold wood, the plan recommend that buy some very expensive wood – I bet you know the one that I am talking about.
As a college student, I did not have that much money – instead, I went for the next cheapest option and I decided to make the piece of furniture out of the book. It took me almost three days, the piece of timber was not that great – in fact, it was so bad that I ended up using it for firewood.
To this day, I feel that the reason I did not like the end product was due to the plans. They were poorly written and very difficult to understand, much like this blog post.
What I am saying is that, if you want to build a bookcase, then you will obviously need bookcase plans. However, not all plans are the same – you get what you paid for. Remember, I went to the library to get some free plans, they did not end up that great.
I am so glad that I found Ted’s website – I remember the joy I felt when I got my hands on over 16,000 different plans.
The best part is that they are so easy to read, not like the silly ones that I got from the library, which would have required an engineering degree to even come close to reading.
